his is the second year of this world-class regatta, and it is also the second year we have the pleasure of being the Title Sponsor. The 1997 event was a highlight of the year for sports in St. Thomas and for all the people of this beautiful island. While it's hard to believe that we could top last year's performances, I understand the 1998 Marriott Frenchman's Reef International Match Race offers an even more competitive field, including the top four world ranked skippers in the sport.
With less than a year to go before the first races get underway to begin the America's Cup competition in Auckland, New Zealand, our event serves as a preview to that contest. Most of the eight teams racing in Charlotte Amalie Harbour represent syndicates which will race Down Under for the oldest trophy in sport. While we admit to a bias towards the Team Caribbean Challenge headquartered on this island, we do wish fair winds and calm seas to all competitors.
As a guest of St. Thomas, you are cordially invited to visit the Marriott Frenchman's Reef and Morning Star Beach Resorts to view the $52 million redesign and renovation of our resort. We're very proud of the work that has been done and we'd be pleased to show you around.
